About Mendocino, California
Located just a few hours’ drive north of San Francisco, Mendocino captivates the hearts and minds of travelers with its scenic beauty and warm, welcoming atmosphere.
An easy and scenic drive from the Bay Area is via Highway 128 which takes you through Anderson Valley (which provides miles of lush vineyards, rolling green hills, and moss-covered oak trees), and then winds you through the foggy mountains and towering Redwood trees, ultimately leading you back to Highway 1, where you’ll be greeted with a rugged coastline, crashing waves, and unparalleled ocean views. If you love epic road trips and spectacular views, you’ll surely be enthralled with this captivating joyride to Mendocino.
The small town of Mendocino is quaint, relaxed, inviting, and hospitable. In addition to offering both casual and gourmet dining options, unique boutiques (for apparel, home furnishings, decor, and more), and art galleries and museums, it features a mix of rustic barns and farmhouses, historic 1800s buildings, preserved Victorian homes, and a nostalgic atmosphere.
If I were to compare it to other similar locales, I’d say it’s a hybrid of Pacific Grove, Calistoga, and Big Sur. Since the town of Mendocino lies just outside Anderson Valley (renowned for award-winning wineries), the area prides itself on having a great food and wine scene, by providing outstanding local wine selections and farm-to-table cuisine.
When it comes to vacations that offer a wide variety of enthralling activities, memorable experiences, and unparalleled vistas – Mendocino is a bucket list location to add to your travel wishlist.
This beautiful rural destination along the Pacific Coast Highway is a great refuge for travelers who want to slow down, be in the present moment, and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. From delightful bed and breakfasts and eco-friendly luxury resorts to award-winning restaurants and pet-friendly activities, today’s travel guide shares the best of Mendocino for travelers and their furry friends.
Where To Stay (Dog-friendly Hotels in Mendocino, California):
While there are several hotels throughout the area to choose from, if you’re looking for a dog-friendly hotel that sets the tone for a wonderful and memorable vacation, here are two great options that provide completely different experiences, depending on what you’re seeking.
MacCallum House Inn:
Step back in time at the MacCallum House Inn, a historic Victorian inn and restaurant that’s located in the heart of downtown Mendocino, just a stone’s throw away from the ocean, outstanding hiking trails, epic cliffside views, and a bevy of eateries, boutiques, and art galleries. Established in 1882, this landmark boutique lodging offers spacious suites and rooms with views of blooming flower gardens and the dramatic crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean along the rocky cliffs.
The property features multiple buildings, including a main house (including an outstanding restaurant), a historic barn, and charming cottages, providing a variety of relaxing accommodations for you and your furry companions.
Pet-friendly rooms such as The Jennie Blair (pictured here) offer luxurious amenities, refreshed rustic-inspired decor (such as antique tables and shabby chic coastal accents), and delightful architectural features (such as old-growth redwood beams, hardwood floors, a sliding barn door to conceal the closet, and wooden bay windows) in addition to breathtaking views from every window, ensuring a comfortable and memorable stay for both humans and pets alike.
The room also features a plush dog bed, dog bowls, and a dog blanket, which makes pets feel at home while traveling.
The enchanting property has been featured in publications such as 7×7, Fodors, Edible Monterey Bay, and more, and includes a gourmet breakfast for hotel guests. In addition to breakfast dishes, the restaurant also serves seasonal cuisine for dinner and boasts a lively old-fashioned bar.
If you’re looking for a hotel that’s ideally situated in downtown Mendocino and makes you feel like you’ve been transported to an era when times were simpler, you’ll enjoy MacCallum House.
The Stanford Inn by the Sea:
Embrace eco-friendly living at The Stanford Inn by the Sea, an inspiring rustic resort overlooking the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by groves of redwood trees, acres of lush foliage, flower gardens and vegetable gardens, and even serene green pastures of grazing llamas, donkeys, and horses.
Owned and operated by husband-and-wife duo Jeff and Joan Stanford (who previously owned an inn in Carmel-by-the-Sea, before buying and developing this property in 1980), this award-winning retreat offers cozy and comfortable accommodations, a calming ambiance that honors and integrates itself into the surrounding natural environment, a plethora of immersive on-site activities and experiences that educate and empower its guests to elevate their approach to a healthy lifestyle, and of course, gourmet vegan dining options.
You can relax in the picturesque treehouse-inspired rooms (which are covered in ivy vines), surrounded by lush gardens with spectacular ocean views, or partake in a variety of wellness programs and activities (such as canoeing, bicycling, therapeutic massages, swimming in the indoor pool, etc.) designed to inspire you to experience the joy of healthy living. After a busy day of outings and activities, you can cozy up by the wood-burning fireplace, or grab a blanket and head out to your private deck to watch the sunset.
The owners of the hotel explained to me that they’re truly passionate about introducing people to a healthier lifestyle (through vegan dishes, cooking classes, sustainable living, and a mindful approach to life). During an in-depth conversation with Jeff Stanford over dinner one evening, he not only shared the background of how they discovered and ultimately constructed the sprawling property as it stands today, but he also provided greater insight into their ethos and belief system, which acts as the foundation upon which the entire resort was built.
To start with, they’re vegan for ethical reasons, as they don’t believe in consuming animal-based foods (due to their affinity towards animals). Secondly, they believe that nutrition is the rock bed of a healthy body, so they have become educated about the importance of a plant-based diet. And thirdly, they are passionate about being eco-friendly, which is why veganism (as they explained) plays a large role in the sustainability movement.
Because of this mission, the hotel also has an on-site Wellness Programs Director (a certified nutritionist) named Sid Garza-Hillman. He’s a published author and podcaster who loves helping clients and guests improve their health and well-being by focusing on small steps to positive changes in their daily habits. This “small steps approach” starts with breathing exercises and stress-reduction techniques, and ultimately leads to dietary improvements that boost wellness.
The incredibly unique and majestic property has received the Condé Nast Travelers Readers’ Choice Award and was ranked by Sunset Magazine as one of the “best dog-friendly vacations”, for good reason. Watching my puppy, Kingsley, experience a burst of enthusiasm the moment we walked through the garden pathway to discover the grazing farm animals proved that this dog-friendly resort is truly a magical place for travelers and their furry companions. It was a memorable experience for both of us, and surely made for one of the highlights of our trip.
With its commitment to sustainability, nutrition, and holistic living, The Stanford Inn provides a tranquil sanctuary for you and your four-legged friends to unwind and reconnect with nature.
