Stealing the spotlight? King Charles III’s coronation celebrated the new British monarch — but it was his son Prince Harry that pulled focus throughout the event.
The Duke of Sussex, 38, was photographed making several funny faces while at Westminster Abbey on Saturday, May 6. In one shot, Harry was seen with an awkward expression while watching the proceedings during the historic event.

Amid tension between him and members of the royal family, the Spare author attended the ceremony on his own after wife Meghan Markle remained in Los Angeles for son Archie’s birthday. Harry had a sweet reunion with Princess Anne, however — with the duo publicly chatting during his brief visit to the U.K. in honor of Charles’ big day.
Charles, 74, succeeded the throne in September 2022 following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II. The late monarch, who was 96 when she passed, was queen of England over 70 years — making her the longest ruler in British history.
The king has already begun overseeing the U.K. and the Commonwealth, but the coronation marked the official beginning of his reign. The Coronation Concert — which serves as a “nationwide act of celebration and friendship,” per the royal family, will be held on Sunday, May 7, at Buckingham Palace followed by a Bank Holiday on Monday, May 8.

Last month, the palace confirmed that Harry would be attending the festivities solo. Meanwhile, Meghan, 41, — with whom he shares son Archie, 4, and daughter Lilibet, 23 months – would be staying behind at their home in California to celebrate their son’s birthday, which landed on the same day at the coronation.
“Buckingham Palace is pleased to confirm that The Duke of Sussex will attend the Coronation Service at Westminster Abbey on May 6th,” a statement read at the time. “The Duchess of Sussex will remain in California with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.”
News of Harry’s attendance comes one month after Us Weekly confirmed that the Invictus Games founder and the Suits alum had been extended an invitation.

“I can confirm The Duke has recently received email correspondence from His Majesty’s office regarding the coronation,” a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan told Us. “An immediate decision on whether The Duke and Duchess will attend will not be disclosed by us at this time.”
The prince had previously been candid about his willingness to attend the big day given his family estrangement. Harry and Meghan have been at odds with Charles, Prince William and Princess Kate since the Sussexes stepped back from their royal duties in March 2020. The Archwell cofounders later claimed in an explosive interview that the royals didn’t want to make son Archie a prince and refused to give him security. The Bench author noted that there were “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born” and that she faced “suicidal thoughts” due to the negative U.K. press at the time.
The January release of Harry’s tell-all memoir, Spare, and the couple’s December 2022 Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, only made tensions rise even higher, as both contained more harsh accusations of how the Firm has treated the couple in the past. (The royal family have not spoken out in response to the Netflix show or Harry’s book.)
“There’s a lot that can happen between now and then,” Harry admitted during a January ITV interview. “But, you know, the door is always open. The ball is in their court. There’s a lot to be discussed and I really hope that they are willing to sit down and talk about it.”
He continued, “I want a family, not an institution. … They’ve shown absolutely no willingness to reconcile. I would like to get my father back. I would like to have my brother back. It never needed to be this way. The leaking and the planting … They feel as though it’s better to keep us, somehow, as the villains.”

The BetterUp CIO and the “Archetypes” podcast host’s coronation decision also comes shortly after Us confirmed that Charles requested that the twosome vacate their Frogmore Cottage so that Prince Andrew could reportedly occupy the space. (The Duke of York, 63, had allegedly been asked to leave his Royal Lodge residence after his sexual assault scandal.)
“The word is that this is both a blow and a shock to them, especially given the timing [right after the release of Spare], but there’s nothing they can really do,” a source exclusively told Us in March of the California-based pair. “Charles could just as easily have kept it open for them if he’d wanted to but it seems clear he doesn’t.”
The insider added at the time: “King Charles maintains the royal family regaining Frogmore is being done for practical purposes. The official line will be that the Sussexes are so rarely in the home and it needs to be occupied and maintained by a full-time resident.”Sign up for Us Weekly’s free, daily newsletter and never miss breaking news or exclusive stories about your favorite celebrities, TV shows and more!
