A 10-year-old boy stole an SUV for a joyride on a Michigan interstate late last month, allegedly to meet up with his mom, according to police.

A week ago Friday (May 27), the unnamed minor stole a 2017 Buick Encore in Buena Vista, 35 miles north of Flint, Michigan State Police tweeted Thursday.
The boy told police he stole the car “because he was trying to get to his mother in Detroit.”

NBC News reports that Saginaw County Central Dispatch received a call from OnStar alerting dispatchers that the vehicle was southbound on Interstate 75. Troopers tried to pull the car over, but the driver did not stop, according to police.
OnStar, a security service installed on the vehicle, then disabled the Buick, the outlet reports.

Several witnesses called the police, simultaneously reporting that a kid was driving a car on the interstate.
A 32-second video of the incident shows police chasing after the SUV, which weaves through lanes before hitting a guardrail and stopping on the shoulder of the road.

A deputy tailed the Buick for around a mile with its emergency lights activated. Meanwhile, OnStar worked to turn off the SUV, according to police. The car was only minorly damaged.
However, no one was injured.

The juvenile attempted to flee from the car before being detained by troopers. He hasn’t been named due to his age.

Child Faces Count Of Unlawfully Driving Motor Vehicle, Fleeing Police, And Resisting Or Obstructing Police
The suspect remains in custody at the Saginaw County Juvenile Detention Center, NBC News reports.
Michigan Live reports the child told police it was his mother’s car.
The boy had reportedly been staying with relatives in Buena Vista and said he took the car to visit his mother, who was reported in Detroit, as per NBC News.
The child is facing single counts of unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle, fourth-degree fleeing and eluding police, and assaulting, resisting, or obstructing police, according to Michigan News.
