A 48-year-old woman ate sweets and drank a single bottle of wine to survive five days stranded in the Australian bush.
According to BBC News, Lillian Ip set out on what was supposed to be a short trip through dense bush in southeast Australia’s Victoria State on Sunday; however, she came to a halt after taking a wrong turn, and her vehicle became stuck in the mud.
She was discovered by emergency services flying overhead as part of a search on Friday after being stranded for five days.
‘The first thing coming in my mind, I was thinking, water and a cigarette,’ Ms Ip told 9News. ‘Thank God the policewoman had a cigarette.’
She continued, ‘I thought I was going to die there. My whole body shut down on Friday.’
As she lost hope of being found alive, she wrote a letter to her family in which she expressed her love for them.
Ms Ip was discovered about 60km from the nearest town.
According to Victoria police, she was unable to walk far due to health issues, so she remained close to her car.
According to BBC News, Wodonga Police Station Sergeant Martin Torpey stated that she only had a few snacks and sweets with her and no water; the only liquid she had with her was a bottle of wine she bought as a gift for her mother.
Sergeant Torpey added that it was her good judgement to stay with her car and not wander off into the bush that helped the police find her.
Ms Ip was taken to the hospital for dehydration treatment but has since returned home to Melbourne.
