Amanda Bynes was placed on a psychiatric hold after calling police on June 17, 2023, to report that she was in distress. The incident marked the second time in three months that the former child star was placed on a psychiatric hold — the first, which occurred in March 2023, came after she was found unclothed and alone while roaming the streets in downtown Los Angeles in the early morning hours. After completing her initial psychiatric hold, TMZ reported on June 22 that the detainment was extended an additional week as Amanda’s family continues to worry about her increasingly erratic behavior. Amanda was previously put on an involuntary psychiatric hold in 2013 after setting a small fire in a homeowner’s driveway. She was placed on yet another hold a year later. Psychiatric holds, sometimes called a 5150, can last up to 72 hours but can also be extended. They are used if a authorities and medical professionals deem someone a danger to themself or others.
The “Hairspray” and “Easy A” actress is hardly the only celebrity who’s been required to undergo a mental evaluation.

Before police found Bam, his brother, Jess, posted a desperate tweet asking if anyone had seen the former MTV star. TMZ reported that Bam had been sending suicidal messages to his family. Eventually, authorities tracked the former pro skater down at a Trejo’s Tacos in Los Angeles. During a conversation with Bam, authorities observed that the one-time reality star’s speech and behavior were erratic. Taking everything into account, including the disturbing text messages he’d been sending, Bam was placed on a 5150 hold. Following his release, he went to rehab.

Heather Locklear was admitted to a hospital and placed on a psychiatric hold in November 2018 after suffering a mental breakdown. While the “Melrose Place” star’s hold was initially supposed to last 72 hours, doctors ultimately added several more weeks to her treatment.

Britney Spears was put on a 5150 hold in early 2008 after locking herself in a room with young son Jayden Federline at her Los Angeles home and refusing to hand him over to ex-husband Kevin Federline. After police intervened, the pop star was wheeled out of her home on a gurney, taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center via ambulance and placed on a psychiatric hold for 72 hours. A few weeks later, she was again placed on a psychiatric hold for what was deemed erratic behavior.

Mischa Barton initially claimed her 2009 hospitalization was due to a botched dental procedure. Years later the star of “The O.C.” admitted that she’d had a “full-on breakdown.” “It was terrifying. Straight out of ‘Girl, Interrupted.’ Story of my life,” she told People magazine. Detailing what led to her emergency mental health treatment, the actress explained that she blacked out after taking a powerful sedative. Once she woke up in the hospital, Mischa got combative with staff. While strapped to a gurney, the actress tried to leave and threatened suicide. “I was never suicidal,” she told People in 2013. “I was just overworked and depressed. But one slip of the tongue in a heightened moment and you find yourself in that situation.” Being 5150’d was “an eye-opener,” she said, adding, “I was deeply hurt at first, and then I accepted this was time I needed to be away from work, my family and all the pressure. I had been through the wringer.”
