The Super Bowl is one of the most popular events in the US, with millions expected to travel to viewing parties to watch the big game on February 11th.

However, on the list of ways people want to spend their time before the game, sitting in a car for hours is probably not very high. If you’re traveling before the Super Bowl, don’t let travel mistakes ruin the biggest sporting event of the year. Here are David Woody, Country Development and Travel Expert at SIXT’s top tips on driving before and after the the big game:

“1. Plan the best route in advance: Many people assume that a journey to a friend’s house to watch the game will be the same as usual, when in reality many will be traveling before the game – especially in places like Las Vegas, site of this year’s game, and on all major highways leading there. In addition, major watch parties are common across the country, so keep in mind the areas which might be the busiest in your city, and try to avoid them or if you’re heading there, be sure to arrive early.

2. Travel when roads are less crowded: Try not to travel just before the game starts or immediately after, as these  will be peak travel times. Understandably, many people will want to make the most of the day and squeeze in other activities before the big game. But this could leave you drained, in addition to crowd considerations which might make you late for your watch party.

3. Check your car before departing: While many people check their cars before a long road trip, some may not think to check it before heading off for the game. Make sure to check your fluid levels, tire pressure, and top off your gas tank or give your EV a full charge before setting off to a Super Bowl party so you’re prepared in case you get stuck in traffic and to help avoid extra stops that could cause delays.

4. Remember to pack all your food essentials: Figuring out how to pack anything edible is always tricky, and heading to a Super Bowl watch party is no different! However, while you are focused on transporting your messy game day treats – from dips and wings to sliders – you may forget to pack other essentials that will help you enjoy your meal! Don’t forget these two key things: ice for your cooler and napkins.

5. Keep calm in traffic: A little traffic or delays are bound to happen when you are traveling during such a popular game, so keep your excitement up by not falling victim to road rage or aggressive driving. Turn on some music or a radio station that broadcasts the game and trust that you will get there, eventually and safe and sound!

6. Avoid traffic violations: Driving errors and parking fines are more common during popular events such as the Super Bowl due to a range of factors, such as an increase of vehicles in low-traffic neighborhoods, driving in unfamiliar areas and irresponsible and distracted driving. Get to your destination early to find an official parking spot and keep clear from blocking driveways, hydrants, and other violations to avoid a fine!

The more aware you are of possible tickets you could face, the better. Waving a foam finger or flag around outside your car could land drivers a fine if you don’t have full control of the vehicle. As always, do not drink and drive and make a plan for a sober ride home.

Lastly, if you’re looking to rent a car for your Super Bowl plans, SIXT has all the car options you’ll need to be ready for the big game.”
