Scenic Whittier, Alaska - Northwest Travel Magazine Jarastyle travel

The passenger train glides along the track on the edge of Turnagain Arm; across the inlet the majestic peaks of the Kenai Mountains are breaking through a fog bank hugging the low foothills. The distance between Anchorage and Whittier is only 60 miles, but it’s 60 miles of gorgeous coastal and mountain scenery. Soon, the Chugach Mountains rise like a wall before the train as we enter the epic 2.7-mile tunnel beneath the mountains and emerge at the quirky town of Whittier on the shores of Prince Williams Sound.

Quirky, because the majority of the town’s population resides in one building, a holdover from its life as a WWII army installation.  Today, it is a civilian town and the gateway to the pristine waters, mountains, hanging glaciers and ice fields of this remote corner of Alaska.

In Whittier, travelers come for the wildlife and unparalleled scenery. The town offers wilderness day cruises, sport fishing charters, kayaking outfitters and even a few inns and bed and breakfasts for those who want to spend more than a day here.
