More wealthy tourists are chasing adrenaline-filled outdoor experiences, according to News24, giving rural South African communities an opportunity to hot them.

Adventure Tourism Committee of the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association, Andre du Toit, says, ‘Adventure tourism is an international trend that is expected to grow in prominence over the coming years,’ and is set to reach R88 trillion by 2032.

Most adventure tourists come from Germany, and ‘adventure’ was ranked the second-most popular activity among European tourists to South Africa.

Du Toit said, ‘the increased desire for adventure experiences by tourists offered an opportunity for rural communities in areas such as the Drakensberg, Karoo, and parts of the Eastern Cape,’ where many adventure guides operate. ‘We believe adventure tourism is the major catalyst required to ignite tourism in rural areas.’

Executive director of the South African Adventure Industry Association Jessi Sunkel said that current requirements to become a guide will change and be more accessible. There will be a differentiation between the training requirements to become an adventure guide and other types of guides in the tourism industry.
