To celebrate Princess Kate and Prince William’s 12th wedding anniversary on April 29, 2023, we’re taking a look at the best royal wedding tiaras in recent decades, starting with the Princess of Wales’ sparkler…
Queen Elizabeth II lent grandson Prince William’s college love, Kate Middleton, the Cartier Halo Tiara, which is also sometimes called the Cartier Scroll Tiara, for her April 29, 2011, wedding at Westminster Abbey in London. The piece was made in 1936 and purchased by the queen’s father, Prince Albert, Duke of York, for his wife three weeks before he became King George VI and she became Queen Elizabeth (later the Queen Mother), The Express reported. The tiara was then given to their eldest daughter, the future Queen Elizabeth II, as an 18th birthday gift.

A few hours before Princess Elizabeth (the future Queen Elizabeth II) married Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh (the late Prince Philip) at Westminster Abbey in London on Nov. 20, 1947, the tiara she’d chosen snapped. Thankfully, one of the jewelers from Garrard was on hand to repair it in time for the ceremony, though if you look closely, you can see a slight gap between the spikes where the hasty fix was made.

Here’s a closer look at the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara. The headpiece was commissioned by its namesake — the paternal grandmother of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II — in 1919 from royal jeweler Garrard. It was originally a necklace that had been a wedding day gift to Mary from Queen Victoria. In 1936, the tiara was gifted to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother who later lent it to her eldest daughter, then still Princess Elizabeth, on her wedding day in 1947.

Princess Eugenie of York borrowed the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik Tiara from grandmother Queen Elizabeth II on her wedding day in 2018. The accessory is made of brilliant and rose-cut diamonds set in platinum with six emeralds on either side. It was made by Boucheron in 1919 “in the fashionable ‘kokoshnik’ style popularized in the Russian Imperial Court,” the palace explained, and bequeathed by its original owner, Dame Margaret Greville, to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother in 1942. (Those diamond and emerald drop earrings, however, were a wedding gift from new husband Jack Brooksbank.)

According to The Court Jeweller, it was passed down to her granddaughter, Queen Ingrid, who wore its diamonds and pearls as a necklace and brooch before having it mounted on a tiara frame for her own daughter, Queen Anne-Marie (Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark’s mother) as an 18th birthday gift in 1964.
