As Mexico’s most dangerous active volcano spews ash into nearby towns, millions of people have been advised to prepare for a potential evacuation.
Over 100 flights were affected on Monday, according to NBCNews. Benito Juárez International Airport said that ash can hinder radio communications, affect passenger planes’ jet engines, and block pilots’ views.
In-person school classes have been suspended in over 52 municipalities across the country, and classes will be held remotely.
The National Civil Protection Co-ordination (CNPC) raised the volcanic threat level to “yellow phase 3”, which calls on over three million people in neighbouring towns and villages to remain alert and prepare for a potential evacuation. They have also advised residents nearby to remain indoors as much as possible due to the dispersion of ash.
CNN reported Mexico City’s mayor Claudia Sheinbaum tweeted, ‘In the case of Mexico City, the risk is falling ash. We are prepared for that scenario and we know what to do. Let’s stay alert.’
The US embassy in Mexico has also said that the volcano ‘has exhibited increased activity since 15 May, registering hundreds of tremors and smoke and ash exhalations.’ They have advised residents to stay over a 12km radius away from the volcano.
