Music Mouse by Kristen Roos and Spøgelsesmaskinen Check out this new audio work by Vancouver-based digital artist and composer Kristen Roos!

The track “Music Mouse I,” part of his album Universal Synthesizer Interface Vol II (purchase and listen on Bandcamp here), was made with the help of Laurie Spiegel’s software Music Mouse – An Intelligent Instrument, first released in 1986. The program is an algorithmic musical composition software that predicts chord and scale convention, allowing the user creative freedom to experiment with other aspects of their track.Music Mouse by Kristen Roos and SpøgelsesmaskinenFor Roos, building this track was an exercise in creating variation, in the repetitive sequence used throughout the piece. The result: a driving orchestral work, full of peaks and valleys underpinned by the nostalgic beats of 1980s drum machines.

The accompanying video piece was created by digital artist Spøgelsesmaskinen (aka Rune Brink Hansen), and features pixelated animations of Macintosh icons taking over a suburban neighborhood in the artist’s signature panning and looping style.
