Kevin Darmody, a fisherman and well-known and experienced member of the Cape York community, was last seen fishing on the Kennedy River in Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park in northeast Queensland.

The two large crocodiles were shot dead on Monday, 1 May, about 1.5km from where he was last seen. Human remains were found in one of the reptiles.

Although the remains are yet to be formally identified, there is a strong suspicion that these two crocodiles are responsible for the missing fisherman.

Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham speculated that Darmody had been dragged into the water by a large crocodile. ‘There was a noise, a loud yell and then the sound of the water splashing,’ he told CNN.

Under Queensland’s management programme, “problem crocodiles” are removed from areas where they threaten public safety and sometimes euthanised.
