Declared to be one of Washington State’s gems, a must-see attraction is the fossilized ginkgo trees in Ginkgo Petrified Forest State Park. The park has over 7,124 acres where you can explore the interpretive trail and see the variety of petrified trees and ancient petroglyphs on display.
The rare ginkgo trees were discovered on park grounds in 1932. Here, you can also see evidence of the Ice Age floods permanently carved into the walls of the Columbia River Gorge. The park also shows off some freshwater features with 27,000 feet of shoreline at nearby Wanapum Lake. Near this lake is a recreation area that’s popular for campers who want to spend a night in this unique landscape.
Check out the interpretive center for a deeper history of the Ice Age Floods and a chance to enjoy the scenic Columbia River. Not only can you touch and see 30 different varieties of fossilized trees, but it’s also a perfect place for birders and elk enthusiasts to experience wildlife.
