According to the South African Council of Geoscience, an earthquake was registered near Harmony Doornkop Gold Mine, West Rand, on Saturday evening, 22 July.
In a statement, the council said, ‘The earthquake registered a magnitude of approximately 2.98 as registered by the South Africa National Seismograph Network (SANSN).’
IOL reported that they called on the public to register their experiences through an online survey.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said on Twitter, ‘We are awaiting official confirmation of the #Tremor around Roodepoort/ Kagiso/ Soweto area. Our emergency teams are combing the area.’
There have been no reports of injury or property damage.
