Dolphins attacked and injured four swimmers on a beach in central Japan over the weekend.
A man in his 60s suffered bites to his hands and broken ribs after being rammed into by a dolphin several metres off Suishohama beach on Sunday morning, 16 July. Another man in his 40s suffered bites to his arm on the same beach. Later in the day, two more people were attacked by dolphins.
Despite signs warning swimmers to avoid touching or approaching dolphins, local police say that six attacks have been recorded this year.
Scientists suggest ‘that wild bottlenose dolphins find swimming alongside humans incredibly stressful, finding evidence that it disrupts their behavioural routines,’ the BBC reported.
