The disparity between the rescue efforts in saving the refugees aboard a fishing boat off the coast of Greece and those aboard the Titan Submersible is challenging to reconcile among families of the Greek shipwreck victims.

300 people were confirmed dead when the overcrowded trawler capsized in the Mediterranean, a loss that many deemed unnecessary as the Greek authorities seemed reluctant to assist the passengers on board.

When compared to the response to save passengers aboard the Titan Submersible, where Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood were on board.

Many were captivated by the ongoing search to find the Submersible as authorities around the world sprang to action to rescue the passengers.

‘We were shocked to know that millions would be spent on this rescue mission. They used all resources, and so much news came out from this search. But they did not bother to search for hundreds of Pakistanis and other people who were on the Greek boat,’ Anees Majeed, a Pakistani who lost five relatives off the Greek coast on 14 June, told The Guardian.

”This is a double standard … they could have saved many of the people if they wanted, or at least they could have recovered the bodies.’

Even though Greece declared three days of mourning following the death of 300 refugees on board, the stark contrast in rescue efforts has sparked a debate in Pakistan about double standards.
