On Friday, June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court made two controversial rulings: First, it ruled that a Colorado web designer is legally allowed to refuse to work with same-sex couples for wedding websites. LBGTQ+ advocates claim the decision will result in discrimination against the gay community. Shortly after, the nine justices struck down President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, calling it unconstitutional. Both rulings were 6-3, and the conservative majority prevailed. After the decisions, many celebrities and notable names weighed in on the rulings. Clearly referring to the LBGTQ ruling, Andy Cohen tweeted, “Legalizing discrimination. Incredible.” He later added, “HAPPY PRIDE.”

“Dear Chief Justice Roberts: You have meddled with the primal forces of nature. And we won’t have it!” –Ron Perlman

“Regardless of your opinion about the Trump presidency, his mark on the Supreme Court has been extraordinary. Decision after decision has restored a fundamental constitutionalist perspective to our legal landscape. Trump’s agenda either remade or restored America – your choice,” James Woods tweeted. Writing specifically about the student loan forgiveness decision, he penned, “You mean taxpayers won’t get the satisfaction of spending their hard-earned money on gender studies majors’ summer trips to France to study non-binary interpretive dance?”

“The Justice’s words are chilling. None of us should stand for a ruling that makes anyone feel less than equal. Unacceptable. Under the law, and of course under God’s eyes, we are all equal and must be treated as such.” –Maria Shriver

After Joe Biden tweeted that the student loan forgiveness decision was “unthinkable,” Dean Cain tweeted, “Unthinkable? I don’t think that word means what you think it means… Perhaps… Unconstitutional?”

“This court really finds a new way to be historically unique a**holes every day,” Josh Gad tweeted. In a follow up message, he added, “Same week: Whites mustn’t be discriminated against at Harvard; Gays must be discriminated by those who wish to. I mean this with all my heart; please go f*** yourselves SCOTUS.”

“Give me one good reason why anybody should pay off your student loans..” –Kevin Sorbo

“Impossible for me not to express my rage today at so many progressives who “couldn’t get excited” or didn’t show up in 2016. You were blind to the fundamental rights that were at stake. The most vulnerable citizens will pay the price of your f****** privilege. Vote.” –Bradley Whitford

“Today (and everyday), I am saddened and devastated by our Supreme Court’s agenda to eliminate racial, geographical, and socioeconomic diversity in higher education. They are pushing us backwards and furthering the archaic belief that rich white people deserve more. Disgusting.” –Claudia Conway

“Roe overturned. Voting Rights stripped away. Gay rights damaged. Struggling Students hurt. Backs turned on Minorities. Elections have consequences. Vote Dems. Vote Biden.” –Rob Reiner

“I’m sorry. In America, your right to exercise your religion doesn’t give you a right to discriminate. If your business is open to the public, you don’t retain some license to discriminate based on religious belief. Religious bigotry is still bigotry. SCOTUS should be ashamed. Just imagine if your “religious beliefs” told you couldn’t serve an interracial couple, because that violates God’s designs. That was the argument that failed in Loving v. Virginia 60 years ago, yet this SCOTUS gives religious intolerance a foothold here.” –George Takei

_

“The Supreme Court’s recent rulings were sadly predictable for anyone who understands the hard-right agenda. Their goal has always been to install Justices whose job is to turn back the clock on our freedoms, on decades of constitutional decisions, and on our continuing struggle to ‘form a more perfect union’ that includes all of us. Let’s vote out their political enablers and rein in the dark, subversive money that supports them in their quest to reverse a century of progress.” –Hillary Clinton
