If you talk about PTO to almost any non-American, they will look at you like you’re crazy. Here in the US, we have a very unhealthy relationship with work and practically have to beg for time off.
CEOs, while obviously not running a charity, are incentivized to grind every bit they can from their workers, but seldom ask if the method for doing so is optimal.
“What, I should maybe take a break sometime and, imagine this, getting a break might actually help me be more productive at work?”
In fact, research shows that vacations actually increase productivity. Humans are simply more productive when rested. Researcher Mark Rosekind of Alertness Solutions found that the rest effect of a vacation can increase performance by 80%.
So then why do most bosses think the key to winning is grinding humans to the bone and working every last hour out of them that they can get?
Recently a member of the AntiWork subreddit shared an almost unbelievable story of his boss asking employees to donate their PTO to a veteran employee instead of, you know, just giving him time off.

Have you had problems with PTO at your company? Is the CEO kind of a dick? I’m guessing most of you have at least experienced a little of this. What do you think the solution is? We’d love to hear!
