There couldn’t possibly be a more fitting name for Cauty’snew EP, La Calle y El Club. While reggaeton continues to dominate the global charts, much of the sound has steered away from the streets and clubs the genre was birthed in. But on La Calle y El Club, Cauty gives us 5 tracks of unbridled reggaeton de la mata.
Right off the bat, on “Señor Oficial,” the _ year-old reggaetonero takes the listener back to that grimey marquesina perreo many grew up on–chock full of classic reggae and dancehall-based samples that will surely take you back to when reggaeton was a sweaty, loud, all-night affair. On “Los Cops,” (the only song on the EP not produced by Cauty himself), he invites the listener to party until the 5-0 makes them stop, giving the song a truly old-school vibe harkening back to the days of reggaeton’s clandestine era.
The harder-edged sound on La Calle y El Club isn’t without its moments of tenderness. This isn’t malianteo either. But what Cautygives us on this EP is a respite from the cut-and-paste pop sounds that have taken over reggaeton, and a playlist for the clubs, parties, and late-night drives that will have you going back for more
