Overstrand deputy mayor, Councillor Lindile Ntsabo, has issued a warning to members of the public not to consume the meat of the Bryde’s whale that washed up on the rocks near Schulphoek, Hermanus.
The whale carcass was sighted floating in the water close to Hermanus Beach Club yesterday, 17 May 2023, before it washed up on the rocks near Schulphoek.
Ntsabo emphasised that the meat and blubber have decayed and pose a risk of food poisoning to anyone who consumes it.
The scientists from the Overberg Stranding Network were unable to determine the exact cause of death, and unfortunately, there is very little remaining material suitable for sampling.
