While Montana is known for its mountains, stargazing is a close second and you can combine the two at the Little Rocky Mountains. As part of the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, there is a ton of history to explore. At a location conveniently separated from any large cities and other light pollution sources, the stars will pop out at you on a clear night. With new hiking trails still being developed, there are plenty of unique and quiet places to gaze up at the sky. The scenic landscape, filled with rivers, mountains and prairie, just adds to the experience.
Bring a dark sky map or get a night sky calculator to know when the area will be the darkest so the constellations are the most visible. A night sky app, such as SkyView (which works without a cell signal) can come in handy, too. You can also bring your camera to try out some night-sky photography to capture the cosmos. And bring layers to bundle up when the sun goes down.
There are a couple lodging options nearby. One of the most popular among stargazers and outdoor enthusiasts is Zortman Motel and Garage, which offers all the cozy comforts of home.
