The theme of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s annual Costume Institute Gala isn’t the only thing that changes from year to year. The guest list — which Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour personally oversees each year — is never the same twice, guaranteeing there’s always at least a few fresh faces on hand during fashion’s biggest night. To celebrate the 2023 Met Gala on May 1, we’re taking a look back at how more than 50 stars made their Met Gala debuts…
Taylor Swift stepped out onto the Met Gala red carpet for the first time in 2008. The singer shined bright in a sequined gold ombre Badgley Mischka gown at that year’s “Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy”-themed event.

Rihanna has continued to up her fashion game for each of the Met Galas she’s attended so far, but her very first appearance still stands out. The pop star donned a dreamy white Georges Chakra gown with an embellished halter neckline for the 2007 ball, which had a “Poiret: King of Fashion” theme.

Emma Stone attended the Met Gala for the first time in 2009. For the “The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion”-themed event, the Oscar-winning actress sported a colorful patchwork dress with a sweetheart neckline and an asymmetrical ruffle down the front. It’s unclear who designed this getup … which is arguably the fashion darling’s worst look of all time.

Khloe Kardashian dazzled in a gold Moschino gown during the “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”-themed 2022 Met Gala — nearly a decade after big sister Kim Kardashian made her Met Gala debut. (Younger sisters Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner were also Met Gala veterans at that point.)

It’s hard to believe, but Megan Fox didn’t attend her first Met Gala until 2021 when the theme was “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” The beauty, who rose to fame in the ’00s, chose to wear this polarizing ruby red pick by Dundas that included lace-up details and a sky-high slit. Her faux blunt bangs also got a lot of attention.

Sienna Miller delivered a snooze while making her debut during 2006’s “AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion”-themed Met Gala.
