To celebrate Marine Protected Areas Day on 1 August, CapeNature is broadcasting an informative series called ‘Chronicles of our coastline’ on its YouTube channel between 3 – 8 August.
Marine specialists present the video series, and topics include making science work, combating crime, perfecting partnerships, and exploring the Betty’s Bay Marine Protected Area (MPA).
CEO of CapeNature Dr Razeena Omar said ‘It is important to educate the public about the importance of MPAs since these seascapes provide a sanctuary for species to reproduce, grow, and thrive, ensuring their long-term survival whilst also contributing to the socio-economic well-being of numerous coastal communities.’
MPAs in South Africa are regulated by the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act. TravelNews reported that ‘CapeNature manages six of the 13 MPAs in the Western Cape.’
