Jesus: Main protagonist. Super influencer. Intense but genial, mild martyr complex, likes bread and wine and miracles, not afraid of a painful death or small spaces.

Herod: Main antagonist. Paranoid autocrat. Surly, solely focused on being king, constantly rages about possible takeover, murderous intentions for practically everyone, strongly disliked except (maybe) by the family members he didn’t kill.

Mary: Jesus’ mother. Easy-going, willing to be pregnant without having sex (self-love okay), doesn’t mind staying in rustic conditions, not disinclined to parent a scandal-prone child, good with fame and world-wide attention.

Joseph: Jesus’ father. Practical, great sense of direction, no real ability to plan ahead, doesn’t mind surprises, committed to marriage and family and step-parenting in unusual circumstances, more of a doer than a talker.

Peter: Jesus’ devotee. Eager, early adopter of new ideas, cool with career and name changes, engages in risky behaviours. Optional: experience fishing and walking on water.

Judas: Jesus’ other devotee. Daring, troubled kid who keenly wants to be part of the group but turns when the price is right, can channel inner gangster.

John the Baptist: Religious figure and Jesus’ cousin. Devout but not an extremist, comfortable speaking to large audiences, anti-establishment, obsessive community organizer. Helpful: knowledge of lakeside baptismal ceremonies.

Mary Magdalene: Jesus’ friend. Radical, not squeamish at the sight of blood, believes in ghosts, sticks around when the going gets tough, able to cry enough tears for a foot spa.

Pontius Pilate: Political figure. Authoritarian but waffly, orchestrates the most infamous death sentence ever, out of touch with constituents and kills a few so is kicked out of office, washes his hands of problems given the chance.

Wise Men: Side characters. Like to go to where the action is, struggle with age-appropriate birthday gift purchases, divert from commitments when necessary, fixated on the stars. Required: must bring own camels and be prepared to trek through the desert.
