More than 300 Pakistani nationals have been confirmed dead after the overcrowded trawler capsized off the coast of Greece last Wednesday, 14 June.

The incident has exposed the extent of the refugee crisis that the EU is currently facing, as tens of thousands seek safety from poverty, persecution, and war.

Pakistan’s Senate chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani made a statement on Sunday with the number of deaths and sent his condolences to the families.

‘Our thoughts and prayers are with you, and we pray that the departed souls find eternal peace. This devastating incident underscores the urgent need to address and condemn the abhorrent act of illegal human trafficking,’ CNN reported him saying.

Pakistan is facing one of its worst economic crises, on top of political turmoil throughout the country. Inflation has soared while food imports have decreased. The number of Pakistani people leaving their country for Europe for a better life has grown exponentially.

In a tweet on Sunday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif ordered a ‘high-level inquiry’ into the incident. Assuring the ‘nation that those found negligent towards their duty will be held to account. Responsibility will be fixed after the inquiry and heads will roll.’
