Remember when former President Donald Trump said he knew “all the best words?” Maybe that’s true, because he seems to also know words that don’t exist. As the onetime POTUS is fiercely active on social media, he often takes unprovoked shots at his political enemies… but he also doesn’t seem to use spell check. On May 30, 2023, he took a swipe at his former press secretary Kayleigh McEnany after he disagreed with 2024 presidential poll numbers she reported. In a message on his Truth Social social media platform, he called her “Kayleigh ‘Milktoast’ McEnany.” Twitter soon had a field day with the message because “milktoast” isn’t a word. It seems that Trump was trying to call her milquetoast, which means a meek person.
From “covfefe” to “liddle” to even calling his wife “Melanie,” this is hardly the first time the former commander in chief publicly defied the English language. Keep reading to see some of his funniest typos…

On Dec. 10, 2018, Donald Trump mistook “smoking” for “smocking” twice. “Democrats can’t find a Smocking Gun tying the Trump campaign to Russia after James Comey’s testimony. No Smocking Gun…No Collusion.” Smocking, for what it’s worth, is an actual word. It’s a embroidery technique for garments. A “smocking gun” would probably be made of yarn or thread.

Donald Trump got corrected by Chris Evans (yes, that Chris Evans) after spelling “counsel” as “councel” in August 2018. “It’s ‘counsel,’ Biff. The word is ‘counsel,'” the “Avengers” star tweeted. “I was trying to comprehend how in the world a man, even as moronic as you, can misspell a word he probably reads fifty times a day. But then it dawned on me, you probably only HEAR the word. You don’t read s***. And we all know it.” Afterward, Merriam-Webster reported that “councel” was the most-searched word of that day.

Perhaps he tweeted from a bakery? In May 2018, Donald Trump was writing about reimbursing lawyer Michael Cohen for a hush-money payout to Stormy Daniels. “Money from the campaign, or campaign contributions, played no roll in this transaction,” the then-president wrote. Butter and jam often play a big role with dinner rolls.

While running for POTUS in 2016, Donald Trump tweeted that Ted Cruz would “loose” to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Irony? On July 3, 2018, Donald Trump complained about the media trying to find mistakes in his tweets. He then made a typo. “After having written many best selling books, and somewhat priding myself on my ability to write, it should be noted that the Fake News constantly likes to pour over my tweets looking for a mistake. I capitalize certain words only for emphasis, not b/c they should be capitalized!” he tweeted.
You see, “pore over” means to examine carefully. “Pour over” means something decidedly different. One of the first people to jab the then-POTUS was “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling, who tweeted, “pour.” She also left a series of “hahahahahahahahahaha” messages and declared Trump the “Gratest Writer on earth.” Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s Twitter account also weighed in, noting that “pour over” means “to make expensive coffee.” It also shaded Trump’s hair, writing, “‘comb over’ ‘to comb hair from the side of the head to cover the bald spot.'”

“Thr coverage about me in the @nytimes and the @washingtonpost gas been so false and angry that the times actually apologized to its…..,” Donald Trump tweeted on Jan. 28, 2017. That’s two spelling errors in one sentence, but it is unequivocally hilarious to think that The Washington Post has flatulence.

In February 2023, Donald Trump asserted on Truth Social that the 2020 election was “stollen.” He also wrote about a “stollen” election on Oct. 31, 2022, Jan. 19, 2023, Jan. 24, 2023, and Jan. 29, 2023. A stollen is a German fruit bread. It’s delicious.

The day after Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017, he wanted to calm a nation. “I am honered to serve you, the great American People, as your 45th President of the United States.” This wasn’t even the first time misspelled “honor.” Following a 2016 debate, he said it was a “great honer!” A great honer, by the way, is someone proficient at sharpening stone.

In May 2016, Hillary Clinton tweeted that Donald Trump was a “loose cannon.” A few months later, Trump tweeted, “Hillary Clinton should not be given national security briefings in that she is a lose cannon with extraordinarily bad judgement & insticts.”
“Lose.” “Judgement.” “Insticts.” All typos.

In August 2017, Donald Trump tweeted about the divide in the United States. “Sometimes you need protest in order to heel, & we will heel…” Two “heels” can actually be expensive at Nordstrom, depending on the designer. The message was taken down, corrected and reposted.

After China took a U.S. underwater drone in December 2016, Donald Trump called it an “unpresidented” move. Trump obviously meant “unprecedented.” Afterward, Dictionary.com said “unpresidented” wasn’t a word it was familiar with.

While complaining about the 2020 election, Donald Trump tweeted about the “poles” closing. In Las Vegas, the poles never close… the polls do.
_
While praising former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi in 2019, Trump tweeted that she’s a “great womem.”

In 2019, Donald Trump tweeted about his political party but called them “Rupublicans.” “Rupublicans, go with Substance and close it out!” he wrote. Not surprisingly, RuPaul fans jumped at the chance to rebrand the GOP. “Sashay away from the @GOP and join the dragulous #RuPublican Partay!” one person tweeted. Another vowed to vote “Rupublican” while adding a pic of RuPaul to the tweet. Another joked, “Sorry @TheDemocrats, I’m now a #RuPublican!”
