Coachella season is upon us, which means it’s time for some festival fashion! Every year, the stars descend on Indio, California, where they show off either amazing — or amazingly terrible — style. In honor of the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival kicking off on April 14, 2023, we’re taking a look back at the best and worst celebrity style from the famous fest over the years. First up?
Really embracing the music festival style during Coachella 2016? Taylor Swift, who looked nearly unrecognizable in such a casual ensemble! The superstar, who was on hand that year to see then-boyfriend Calvin Harris perform, rocked a black skirt and oversized gray T-shirt with sparkly sneaker slides for a very un-Taylor look that we loved!

At Coachella 2015, Kylie Jenner and Kendall Jenner showed just how disparate their styles are. The makeup mogul — who was in the midst of her fascination with vibrant hair colors at the time — wore neutral separates and a sleeveless coat with desert boots while her supermodel big sis wore a cropped brown vest over a bikini top, high-rise denim and layers of chunky jewellery.

There’s no denying it: Victoria Justice understood the assignment when she attended Coachella in 2014. The former Nickelodeon star showed up in an outfit that was super on-trend for the time: a crochet neon orange top, white short shorts and brown booties. The star of her look? Her flower crown, duh!

What is that?! Kendall Jenner sported this bizarre oversized sweatshirt with thick straps atop a pair of denim cutoffs in 2017, leaving fashion onlookers confused as to what exactly was happening. The accessories — clunky shoes, a baseball hat and a satchel purse — all added insult to injury with their random, mismatched nature.

One of our favorite festival fashion moments? When Gigi Hadid attended Coachella 2019 in this utilitarian-inspired look that was equal parts flattering and funky. The supermodel wore a ribbed white tank top with coordinating textured pants that featured a statement belt and added some color with a fun tie-dye vest and complementary accessories including pink sunglasses and a shell choker.

On-point! Alessandra Ambrosio is a fashion queen of Coachella, and her 2017 ensemble proved it! The star wore a belted Rolling Stones minidress with combat boots and made sure to accessorize with layers of jewelry.

Poppy Delevingne nailed festival style at Coachella 2017 when she donned classic cutoffs, a Levi’s cropped tank top and space buns. White sneakers and funky shades finished off the look flawlessly.

We wanted to love Normani’s Coachella 2019 look, but we just couldn’t get behind it. The “Fair” singer stopped by the YouTube Music Artist Lounge in a netted neon minidress with black separates beneath.

What’s going on with that skirt, Victoria Justice? The star hit Coachella 2018 rocking this unfortunate getup comprised of a shiny bralette-like crop top and strange skirt that started out with denim before giving way to a completely sheer black skirt. The bulky boots also didn’t help matters.

Halsey is no stranger to a worst dressed list, so her Coachella 2016 getup wasn’t a huge surprise. The singer opted for a severely shredded white crop top underneath a pink moto jacket and a pair of barely there shimmery pink shorts and finished the look off with a pair of shiny bubblegum-pink boots.

Gigi Hadid looked downright regal while strolling barefoot through Coachella 2015. The supermodel rocked this belted breezy white dress, complete with a high slit, underneath a printed kimono for a bohemian-chic vibe. But our favorite element of Gigi’s look? Her bronze headwrap.

No shirt, no problem! Kellan Lutz stood out among the Coachella 2016 crowd, showing off his six pack and (fake) tats as he walked around the festival grounds topless. And though we’re not exactly complaining, maybe next time just wear shorts instead of jeans? Or ditch the cowboy hat? Your choice, Kellan!

Olivia Culpo looked cute and casual when she attended the Revolve Festival during Coachella 2019. She wore an ultra-cropped tee (that showed off her leopard-print bra beneath) and flattering high-waisted denim shorts. Her choice of footwear, however, remains questionable for the desert!

Since Coachella takes place in the spring, Rachel Zoe’s dreamy white dress was the perfect pick for a party during Coachella 2018. We loved the romantic sleeves, ruffles and subtle tiered levels of this breezy frock that made it perfect for the desert weather.

Oh, Rita Ora! She never lets us down in the horrible fashion department! This metallic silver slinky dress she wore in 2017 was bad enough on its own, but her accessories (that hat! those boots! those sunglasses at night!) only made it worse.

Kiernan Shipka nailed Coachella style in 2016 in this sweet two-piece denim ensemble with butterfly embroidery, which made for an outfit that both looked cool and definitely kept her cool in the desert heat!

Sheer is always in when it comes to festival style, but Selena Gomez’s look in 2014 was a bit confusing. The star threw on a long floral-patterned sheer dress over what looks like a typical Coachella ensemble — a black crop top and white denim cutoffs — making the addition seem excessive.

The young star’s sunglasses, chokers and layered necklaces elevated the all-black ensemble to supermodel-style status.

Coachella clashing! In 2017, model Romee Strijd went with so many different fabrics, it made us dizzy! The Victoria’s Secret Angel opted for polka dots on the top, a camouflage skirt on the bottom and a cherry-red bomber jacket tied around the middle for an extra-loud and extra-confusing look.
