Medical procedure

Morgan Wade — the singer behind 2021’s “Reckless,” which Rolling Stone dubbed the “best country album of the year” — will undergo a double mastectomy after learning she’s at an increased risk for breast cancer. The “Wilder Days” singer recently told Page Six that she got tested for genetic mutations because certain cancers run in her family. Then, while on tour in Europe last year, Morgan got the news that she didn’t want to hear. “I [have] the RAD51D gene, it’s a breast cancer gene so I’m having a double mastectomy in November,” she explained. “I’m going really hard up until November so then November and December I have off to rest.”

R.I.P.

Simply the best. Tina Turner, one of the most transcendent names in music, died at 83 on May 24 after battling what her rep described as “a long illness.” “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow,” her rep said in a statement. “Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”

Throughout her career, the “What’s Love Got To Do With It” icon overcame hardships and domestic abuse to eventually win eight Grammys and become of the most popular artists of all time. Media outlets reported that Tina suffered a stroke in recent years and faced intestinal cancer as well as kidney disease that required a transplant.

Home $weet home

Straight cash! That’s how JAY-Z and Beyonce paid for their new $200 million home in Malibu! And, to top if off, TMZ reported on May 21 that the couple plans to keep the $100 million Bel Air mansion they already own. The new place, which is the most expensive home ever purchased in California, will serve as a “weekend home” for the couple and their kids, though it’s believed that the new 30,000-square-foot mansion will eventually serve as the family’s main residence. The couple can afford it, as Jay is reportedly worth $2.5 billion, whereas Bey is reportedly worth $500 million.

In the race

Some notable names had some things to say about Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign launch on Twitter Spaces on May 24… a launch that was riddled with technical glitches with the app repeatedly crashing as thousands of users logged on. The Republican Florida governor, 44, finally began speaking about 30 minutes into the event. After the launch, many in entertainment reacted to the, well, flawed rollout. “It’d be like if the escalator had just stopped halfway down…,” Jon Stewart tweeted, referencing Donald Trump entering the 2016 race while riding an escalator. By the way, Trump — who’s also running for president — said, “When the Ron DeSanctimonious facts come out, you will see that he is better than most Democrat governors, but very average, at best, compared to Republican governors.” Whoopi Goldberg meanwhile, said, “Double check, make sure stuff works.”

Health update

On May 23, Jason Carter — the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter — gave an update on his grandfather’s health three months after reps for the political leader, 98, announced he was entering hospice care at his modest Plains, Georgia, home “instead of [seeking] additional medical intervention” following a series of short hospital stays. Jason opened up after speaking at an event honoring his grandfather, CBS News reported, sharing that Jimmy remains in good spirits and is enjoying ice cream as he stays abreast of updates on his foundation’s humanitarian work around the world as well as public discussion of his legacy.

“He is certainly getting to see the outpouring and it’s been gratifying to him for sure,” Jason said, explaining that his grandparents are “just meeting with family right now, but they’re doing it in the best possible way: the two of them together at home. They’ve been together 70-plus years. They also know that they’re not in charge. Their faith is really grounding in this moment. In that way, it’s as good as it can be.” He added that the family is also in a positive frame of mind. “We did think that when he went into hospice it was very close to the end,” Jason said. “Now, I’m just going to tell you, he’s going to be 99 in October.”

Engaged

She’s found her happy ending again. Jana Kramer is engaged, she revealed on Instagram on May 25. The “One Tree Hill” actress and country music singer shared a series of images revealing her new bauble, which was given to her by beau Allan Russell, her love of six months. Jana spoke more about the engagement on her “Whine Down” podcast, saying the Scottish former professional soccer player, who’s now a coach, asked her and her kids to go for a walk to the house Jana’s building. While sitting on the front porch, he popped the question. It was “very sentimental and it just felt right,” Jana said. This will be the fourth marriage for the “I Got the Boy” singer.

Accepting blame

After all these years, Arnold Schwarzenegger is opening up about his cheating scandal, love child and lengthy divorce from Maria Shriver, to whom he was married for 25 years. In a May 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the “Terminator” star took responsibility for the divorce. “It was my f*** up. It was my failure,” he said, further confessing that he does not miss being married. “[The divorce] was very, very difficult in the beginning,” he said. However, he added, “Eventually, you move on. I have a wonderful girlfriend, [physical therapist] Heather Milligan, who is very successful. I’m really proud of her, and I love her. At the same time, I love my wife. She and I are really good friends and very close, and we are very proud of the way we raised our kids. Even though we had this drama, we did Easter together, Mother’s Day together, the Christmases together, all birthdays — everything together. If there’s Oscars for how to handle divorce, Maria and I should get it for having the least amount of impact on the kids. The sweetness and kindness you see in them, that’s from my wife. The discipline and work ethic is from me.”
