“I started out as a fan of Tina Turner, then a full-on groupie, following her from show to show around the country, and then, eventually, we became real friends. She is our forever goddess of rock ‘n’ roll who contained a magnitude of inner strength that grew throughout her life. She was a role model not only for me but for the world. She encouraged a part of me I didn’t know existed. Once she claimed her freedom from years of domestic abuse, her life became a clarion call for triumph.

I’m grateful for her courage, for showing us what victory looks like wearing Manolo’s and a leather miniskirt. She once shared with me that when her time came to leave this earth, she would not be afraid, but excited and curious. Because she had learned how to LIVE surrounded by her beloved husband, Erwin, and friends. I am a better woman, a better human, because her life touched mine. She was indeed simply the best.” —Oprah Winfrey

“How do we say farewell to a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world? Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in her life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and for others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion, and freedom should look like. Her final words to me — for me — were ‘You never mimicked me. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world.’ I shall hold these words close to my heart for the rest of my days. I am honored to have known Tina Turner. I am humbled to have helped show her to the world. So on today, while we mourn the loss of this iconic voice and presence, she gave us more than we could have ever asked. She gave us her whole self. And Tina Turner is a gift that that will always be ‘simply the best.’ Angels sing thee to thy rest…Queen.” –Angela Bassett, who played Tina in the 1993 biopic “What’s Love Got to Do With It”

“Sad to hear we have lost Tina Turner. She had been ill for a long time, and struggling to stay in touch with old friends. She will have some peace now,” The Who co-founder and guitarist Pete Townshend told People magazine, going on to call Tina — who played the Acid Queen in The Who’s 1975 film “Tommy” — an “astonishing performer” and an “astounding singer” as well as an “R&B groundbreaker.”

He continued, “We don’t want to say too much about Ike Turner — her abusive husband — but her early records with him were simply out of this world. She always took flight when she worked with him, leaving him like a fifth wheel, chipping away at his basic riffs. When she was finally free of him her work ascended to new even higher heights. It didn’t seem possible.”

Pete added, “If you ever had the privilege of seeing Tina perform live you will know how utterly scary she could be. She was an immense presence. A female Little Richard. She seemed like a giant: shaking, sexual, physical and stunningly beautiful. In the flesh she was fragile, vulnerable and a truly sweet and empathetic person.”

Pete wrote the track “Acid Queen,” which Tina released as a U.K. single. “It is often my job to sing that song with The Who, so she always comes into my mind. It isn’t easy to deal with,” he told People. “The song is about abuse at the hands of an evil woman. How she turned that song on its head! All the anger of her years as a victim exploded into fire and bluster and a magnificent and crazy cameo role that will always stay with me.”

He concluded, “She has been in my mind for the last 10 years. I kept meaning to track her down, and see how she was. I truly thought she would live forever.”

“I am so profoundly sad abt the death of the indomitable force that was #TinaTurner. Some of you know I was married very young to a man involved in the music business. When we 1st met, he & his partners were getting ready to open a nightclub in Dallas called Soul City. On our first date, we went to a club to talk to an act they wanted to open the club. That act was #IkeAndTinaTurner… They blew me away! They opened the club for us & played a few times a year. Imagine that amazing act, legs flailing, in a 400 seat house. We used to go to dinner and I would see them several times a year. I remember being backstage when Ike grabbed her by the back of the neck & rammed her head into a wall. I was 17. I had never seen anything like that. I was scared & appalled. She just blew it off & went out singing and dancing, with those amazing legs. She had my heart and I adored her. What a talent! What a woman! What a life!” –Morgan Fairchild
