The second largest province in South Africa, the Eastern Cape is riddled with hidden gems. With long stretches of wild coast, green hills as far as the eye can see, and the glorious Route 62 that takes you through the Karoo, the EC should be on your holiday bucket list this year.

1. Morgan Bay Cliffs

The cliffs of Morgan Bay can either be a moderate 4 km out-and-back walk or a short drive. The benches set up to overlook the ocean below make the perfect picnic spot, and a great break if you’ve chosen to walk. Stand close to the edge (but stay safe!) to hear the waves crashing against the rocks below, the sound almost reverberates through the air.

2. Langkloof Valley

This lesser-known region makes up part of Route 62. Langkloof is perfect for a scenic road trip, filled with mountain vistas and orchards. The road takes you through South Africa’s fruit route, passing towns like Misgund, Louterwater, Krakeel, Joubertina, Twee Rivier, and Kareedouw. Enjoy the snow-covered mountain caps in winter and the fruit blossoms in winter, as well as horseback riding and mountain biking throughout the area.

3. Mzamba Forest

Over 85 million years ago, the river washed trees onto the beach two kilometres north of the Wild Coast. The wood was replaced by minerals, petrifying the trees. The ancient Mzamba Forest is found along the wild coast near Port Edward and is only visible during low tide. Spend time exploring the fossilised trees along the beautiful Eastern Cape coast.

4. Schotia Safaris Game Reserve
